The Brothers Bloom Review

Forget Transformers. Forget Harry Potter. Forget Terminator and Star Trek. In my opinion, Rian Johnson has made the must see movie of the summer: The Brothers Bloom.

From the opening moments of Ricky Jay's narration you know you are in a place of blissful indulgence. Rian Johnson crafts a film that is something very hard to achieve: a con movie with a heart. And he does this on his second film. That makes the film all the better.

Stephen and Bloom are brothers that make their way through brilliantly complex cons of Stephen's invention. But Bloom wants out. Stephen convinces him to hang around for one more con. The plan is to trick a rich heiress out of her money. The problem is trying to figure out who is conning whom.

The Good: Everything. Mark Ruffalo is fantastic as the giddy conman that is Stephen. His joy over the con is infectious and you will find yourself smiling ear to ear. Adrien Brody as Bloom does what he does best: he is self-loathing and in that finds a bit of humor. Penelope, the heiresss, is played to perfection by Rachel Weisz. You will fall in love with her the moment you meet her. And prepare yourself for some fantastic supporting performances from the minor characters. Rinku Kikuchi will completely blow you away as Bang Bang.

The cinematography is beautiful and the score is the best of the summer. Suck it Danny Elfman. This is how you make a score that is appropriate for the film you are working on.

The Bad: The only bad thing I can say about the movie is it really does nothing to break new ground. You've seen this stuff before, but you've never had so much fun seeing it before.

The Ugly: Nothing. Everything in this film is absolutely beautiful.

I will finish this review by simply saying that this is the must see movie of the summer.
