Drag Me to Hell Review

Drag Me to Hell is one of the most fun experiences you will have at the theatre this summer.

Horror has changed since Sam Raimi directed his last film in the genre, Army of Darkness. Know what the great thing is? He doesn't give a shit. He makes this movie his way. Also known as the right way.

The current state of horror attempts to either imitate Japanese horror films - which never works - or is just Torture Porn. Quick crash course: Torture Porn sees how far the gruesomeness can be pushed. In short, how many intestinal organs and tits can you get on the screen? But what these methods lack is suspense and tension. They get the scare but only for a moment. A horror film with tension and suspense is one that gives the scare that sticks with you long after the credits have rolled.

Drag Me to Hell is such a film. However, it is also a Sam Raimi film which means that there is quite a bit of humor in the film. He crafts a film that makes you jump, scream, and laugh - all in the same scene. Without being burdened by complicated plotlines and large amounts of characters, it is easier for the film to build the necessary tension and deliver the goods.

The story: Christine Brown, played with brilliant fragile ferocity by Alison Lohman, is a loan officer at a bank. She denies an old gypsy woman an extension on her mortgage so the gypsy lays a curse on her. After that she has three days before a demon comes to claim her soul and...drag it to hell. See? Nice and simple.

This is a film that shows audiences that you don't need a chainsaw or a Jigsaw to make things scary. All you need is some dark lighting and a few Dutch angles. There doesn't need to be layers of eerie noises because silence is more frightening. Holding back on the violence is always more effective than reveling in it. Everything in moderation.

Conclusion: Drag Me to Hell is a horror movie that does everything right.

I kind of like scary movies. Not a big fan, and I don't like being scared, but sometimes it's fun. I liked the Ring, and even the Ring 2. What I dislike is the gory stuff. Gory stuff does not make a movie scary. It makes a movie gory. So I'm glad this is not Torture Porn. I might actually go see this now. Maybe. But at least you changed my mind from "Drag Me to Hell No," to "Maybe."
